Dark colors do not shrink as much as a room light colors do not enlarge. This is the rate of brightness in the color that will give that impression. A pure color is very bright while a shade made with the black will absorb light even if it is pale. For example, a pearl gray absorb more light than a bright red color.
Also, the way the colors are arranged is crucial. Is the effect of color contrast that makes a room feel smaller or larger.
